Sleeve Gastrectomy
The sleeve gastrectomy is performed by dividing the stomach with a surgical stapling device in a longitudinal direction to create a small narrow stomach with a capacity of 100-150ml. The stomach is shaped like a banana or the “sleeve” of a shirt.
It is a purely restrictive procedure that limits the portion size of meals. There are also hormonal changes that suppress appetite. Patients are typically in the hospital for 2 days.
The sleeve gastrectomy can result in losing excess weight and can also result to resolution or improvement of many of the obesity-related health conditions. Individual results may vary.
There are risks associated with the sleeve gastrectomy, some of which include gastric leaks, bleeding, and obstruction. However, with an experienced care team the risks tend to be low.
